To put a grid on an image 

1- load the image

2- Filter->Render->pattern->Grid

If the grid is not showing this means that an image has not been loaded or a canvas has not been set up.

This loads the legacy grid that with allow for the changing of the spacing of the lines, width of the lines, and color of the lines.
