The summer’s project was pastels of glass paperweights. The process involved creation of a watercolor background on cold press with pastel. Pastels are normally applied to tinted grounds such as from pastel papers or adding a tint to the ground on a panel. The Brisbane group was up to the challenge of creating a watercolor background and then applying pastel on NOT watercolor paper. The artists were Caludette, Frances, Francine and Linda. Examples of their work are below.

The still-life - painting water with watercolor & pastel

How to paint a glass jar of water with a stick inside. This is an exercise in looking closely at the various optical effects that will suggest the object - a jar of water: reflections, refraction, surface lighting, cast shadows, etc. Students will have 9×12″ Fabrianno paper, several brushes and Blick dye colors to explore how to depict a difficult subject matter - water.

How to improve watercolor technique with exercises in Chinese Brush Painting (CBP). Learn how Chinese Brush Painting can improve your brushwork. Students will have rice paper, several sizes of “bamboo” and Hake brushes, inks and other supplies. Learn first the technique for holding the brush, the application of ink on paper and simplified shapes of bamboo, birds, plants, flowers, food, etc.

The Four Gentlemen

First Session: Intro. to materials - ink, paper, grinding ink on a stone, types of brushes, how to hold brush, how to paint the “4 gentlemen” - plum flower, bamboo, orchid & chrysanthemum.

Tutorial: Computers - Adults 18+

Personalized computer instruction based on your individual needs. If you have special questions, need individual training, need help installing software on your laptop, custom training or need other tutoring about computers this class is for you. These sessions are a one-on-one custom instruction to be arranged by appointment (minimum one hour ). Please pre-register in room 9 at least one week before desired appointment, then call 415-336-4635 for appointment. Bring your registration form to instructor. You will have instructor’s full attention.

$42 (per hour) resident/$45 (per hour) non-resident

Please arrange your tutorial session time by calling the instructor several days before the desired date. An appointment is necessary. This is not a walk-in computer clinic.

FAQS

Are these classes just for Seniors?

No. The classes are for adults of ages over 18. These classes are not designed for “Seniors” only nor are they intended for youth under the age of 18. The classes have a curricula and present important content.

Can I drop in whenever I want to?

No. You must start with the first day of the class. It is important to learn what is presented on the first day as you may get behind. If you cannot attend the first day, please make arrangements with the instructor.

If I’m late for my class, will the material be repeated?

No. Classes start promptly at the posted time. Topics that are presented often depend upon what was presented previously. Due to the limitations of the facility, we are unable to repeat lessons after class. If you need important information, we suggest you schedule a tutorial with the instructor.

If I miss a class, can I get a make-up class?

No. There are no “make-up” days for these classes. If you miss a class, you cannot get a free class at some other time.

How are these classes different from other classes offered elsewhere?

These classes are “hands-on” for most of the time. You will be able to practice what you learn during the class.

Can I practice what I learn after hours in the classroom?

The classroom may or may not be open on other hours. Other classes and meetings are held in the classroom at different times. We suggest you come to the class early (such as 1/2 hour before the class starts) to practice on materials covered. You can also use computers available at the center’s library, or the branches of the public library nearby.

Are there book(s) for these classes?

No. We do not use any particular text for these classes. We suggest you check out a “Beginning Computer” type book/dev at the library to supplement your instruction.

Do I need to take the introductory course before I take other advanced courses?

Yes. You must have basic keyboard, mouse and Windows file-handling skills before you take other advanced classes. If you have learned these skills elsewhere, please make arrangements with the instructors before enrolling in the advanced classes.
